Gold tokenization in London

London is the world's largest wholesale and over-the-counter (OTC) gold market, approximately 70% of global notional gold trading volume, handling thousands of tons in daily trading volume, dominating the global price discovery, and clearing at global level most wholesale trades. Gold transactions in London are largely operated thorough the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). By mid-2026, LBMA reported an average daily trading volume of 45.8 million troy ounces, translating to roughly $207.6 billion changing hands every single day, and an immense physical vaulting that secures 9,464 tons of gold, valued at over $1.2 trillion

London operates primarily as an OTC market, where transactions happen directly between institutional counterparties rather than on a public centralized exchange; the market is structurally divided into two metrics: the ‘Trade Data Volume’ (total contracts signed) and ‘Clearing Data’ (the actual net volume settled after balancing out trades). However, the traditional ways to operate of an OTC market are now being challenged by the introduction of new technologies as it is in the case of the tokenization and its support platforms, capable to bridge the gap between traditional commodities and blockchain technologies, posing a structural and competitive thread. However, the thread of the tokenization, rather than making London obsolete, it has forced the city to rapidly modernize to defend its historical dominance.

It is noted that digital assets carries distinct risks, unlike physical gold held in the investor’s hands, tokens expressed in gold introduces the smart contract vulnerabilities, platform hacks, and protocol de-pegging risks, factually an investor could lose all of its capital if the issuing entity or underlying smart contract fails. Although retail traders seem to be willing to accept the mentioned risk buying fractioned gold token in open exchanges, this is not an option for institutional investors, that in order to mitigate the vulnerabilities of smart contracts opted to use specialized digital assets OTC desks, considering strategic reasons such as: a) Access to ‘deep liquidity’ avoiding ‘Slippage’, large institutions move tens of millions of dollars in PAX Gold (PAXG) or Tether Gold (XAUT) executing trades directly with a counterparty in order to avoid crashing or spiking the spot price on public order books, b) ‘Customization’ a digital OTC desks allow institutional counterparties to trade tokenized gold directly against standard fiat currencies, stablecoins (USDT/USDC), or major cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin or Ethereum) in a single transaction, and c) ‘Continuous Settlement’, as traditional London OTC gold markets only operate during banking hours and settle on a T+2 timeline, digital asset OTC transactions in contrast offer 24/7/365 continuous trading with instantaneous (T+0) settlement.

The dominance of London as a center for transacting paper contracts and physical gold resides on of the following foundational pillars, a) Liquidity and Scale, controlling circa 70% of the gold trading volume, b) Structural Flexibility, allowing institutional counterparties to transact of principal-to-principal basis, instead of standardized future exchanges an in the case of New York, c) Standard settings, London sets the de facto rules for how precious metals are refined and traded worldwide, such as the ‘Good Delivery List’ which is a strict chain off custody passport to ensure absolute trust and fungibility across global networks, d) Ideal geographic time zone, London bridges the closing hours of Asian markets with the opening bells of the US, e) Infrastructure, London possesses a massive vault infrastructure. However, none of the mentioned pillars are expected to last as competitive advantages unless new technologies run on supported legal frameworks are embraced and ideally adapted to empower the existing capabilities of London.

The threat is highly active, and London has reacted towards adopting the technology rather than confronting it. Clear evidence is that the regulation is under revision, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has consulted with major banks on frameworks to allow token expressed in gold to be officially recognized as valid collateral for uncleared OTC derivatives, the consultation supports the efforts of the FCA and the Bank of England to prepare new regulation specifically for tokens expressed in gold. Furthermore, new technological developments are being implemented to facilitate the use of tokens, the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) and the World Gold Council have developed the Gold Bar Integrity (GBI) security platform, which uses distributed ledger technology (blockchain) to register and track physical gold bars from the mine right into London's vaults, ensuring digital security matches physical reality. These are defensive actions to preserve London’s status as the top global bullion hub amid rising technological and geopolitical competition.

Moreover, the gold market around the world is experiencing a significant transformation, due to the competitive scalation between the wholesale paper liquidity of the West and the physical consumer-driven demand of the East. Effectively, London Wholesale & OTC Trading Volumes remains the absolute epicenter for institutional gold pricing and clearing, while Consumer Demand Trends in Asia While London controls the wholesale clearing (currently Asia accounts for roughly 60% to 70% of global physical gold demand), and this is a trend that is been particularly shaping due to the incorporation of new technologies, in particular electronic contracts. Factually, driven by a missive structural consumer demand for physical gold, Asia currently emerges as the fastest growing region for tokenized commodities, with the most functionally evolved ecosystem that integrates central banks, commercial banks, and retail consumers all interact with tokenized assets on a daily basis. Alternatively, the UK have responded mounting a smart architecture that will allow banks to use tokenized gold and money market funds to settle high-finance OTC derivatives instantly, incorporating legal frameworks for complex bank to bank settlements, becoming the global hub for complex wholesale capital market technology. Other markets in the world that can also represent threats are Europe and Switzerland arguably the most evolved region for gold tokenization due to its deep historical ties to bullion storage and unmatched regulatory execution, and the United States with a leading role due to its sheer scale.

Ultimately, if a conclusion can be derived from the arguments raised on this paper, is that London remains as a global wholesale lead in gold and it is reacting to the technological race on the gold market. Also, that at the moment tokenization platforms are still unlikely to destroy the physical London vaults, because digital tokens still require trusted, audited physical gold to back them one-to-one, however, in order to stay at the lead, it is required not only rely on state-of-the-art technological innovation but on advance legal frameworks for complex settlements. It is clear that if London can’t effectively modernize the legacy London OTC bullion market by turning existing institutional vault receipts into blockchain-based ledger items, this incapacity poses a real threat that will lead into infrastructure obsolescence, risking London to lose its lead on the bullion market to other digital hubs in Switzerland, Singapore, or Shanghai.
